| A major event in the evolving story of the Wolcott Historical Society took place in September 2003 with the relocation of the Northrup Family Carriage House from its site since 1889 behind the Northrup home on West Main Street to Jefferson Street. The Historical Society, with this permanent home now established, has progressed to a stage where it has become able to reach out more effectively to that segment of the public that shares an interest in learning about and preserving local and area history. |

Over the past 5 1/2 years, the Jefferson Street site has evolved/progressed to the finished Carriage House Museum. Interior and exterior remodeling and modifications in various forms have been accomplished by a host of volunteers, both amateur and professional. This list of men, women and youth is quite long. Those of us, who have been on hand since "the move" of 2003, and back to the Historical Society birth in 1999, have seen an enormous collective effort to establish the Jefferson Street property as a meaningful Wolcott address and establishment. The Carriage House's primary function provides for display areas for historical artifacts, but the building also houses a separate gift shop, main business office, genealogy room, kitchen, conference room, and work and storage areas. Together, these facilities are making it possible to pursue a more effective, organized outreach and service to the public in the four townships of northeast Wayne County and beyond. Members of the society, implementing their interests and talents, are striving to create interesting programs on various historical subjects. We can and expect to more over time. |
|
This past summer (2009) commemorates the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Wolcott Historical Society, with Norma and Bob Stewart heading up the effort back in 1999. Wolcott Historical Society is a member of and participant in a network of several historical societies in towns/villages of Wayne County. We find it interesting and fun to be among them at joint luncheon meetings that are regularly held. The common interests of county historical subjects are covered. Come join in these meetings. A list of upcoming events can be found on the Wayne County Historians website. |

The society presently can claim 180 membership addresses that include individuals and families. We expect to continue to add to this list. The Wolcott Historical Society/Carriage House Museum quarterly newsletter provides as much current news as can be compiled as well as features stories on historic people and places. |
